Southern Comfort, Original, 35%

The taste of whiskey made comfortable it states on the back label.

But what if you’re already comfortable with the taste of whiskey?

I suppose this popular drink isn’t for you then.

Clearly it’s aimed at a big section of the market as Southern Comfort is easily available in virtually every premises selling alcohol in Ireland – usually on the whiskey shelf too!

This bottle was gifted to me a number of years ago & has languished at the back of my drinks stash since but hey – I enjoy exploring!

The nose is sweet – bubblegum & aniseed.

The palate is sweet & heavily honeyed. Definitely smooth – as also mentioned on the label!

The finish is sweet with a merest hint of spice – but warming – which is the one thing I enjoyed about Southern Comfort!

Not really my bag.

I actually enjoy the taste of whiskey & don’t need it disguised with additional sweeteners & spice to make it palatable.

Others obviously do – & from 1874 onwards Southern Comfort has clearly been satisfying them.

Southern Comfort is also available in smoky & 100 proof versions too.

Tastes like liquid bubblegum to me!

Royal Envy, Exclusive Premium Whisky, 42.8%, India

I wouldn’t mind getting hold of this bottle.

A number of things strike me.

Tales of solid smokiness tempt me.

While the name, labelling & general packaging all allude to a superior product- even if it’s a regular Indian made whisky using imported Scotch malt blended with Indian grain.

So much in the whisky world hinges on desirability, exclusivity & limited runs – often to the detriment of what really matters to me – taste.

Royal Envy seems to be the ‘crowning glory’ of that exclusivity bubble – although it might be tainted by a certain royal payment to quieten a paedophilia scandal.

But a smoky Indian whisky is something I’d like to savour.

Madre Mezcal Artesanal, 45%

Anytime I pop over the Irish Sea I tend to use up my amazon.co.uk vouchers – which are otherwise worthless – & order up a bottle of spirits.

Rather than leave behind a partially drunk full-size offering the attractively designed Madre Mezcal 200ml caught my eye.

Made using 2 different styles of agave plant – Espadin & Cuishe – & roasted in earthen pits – Madre Mezcal is all about the raw ingredients & artisanal production methods used in this unaged spirit for the wonderful flavours to be enjoyed.

And what flavours they were!

An engaging soft smokiness off the nose. Not peaty – more earthy or woody like a gentle campfire.

Smooth & oily on the palate coating the mouth in subtle herbal agave notes.

A flourish of warming heat on the finish where the dry & slightly prickly smoke reappeared leaving the embers slowly drifting away.

A well rounded & finely balanced Mezcal offering a delicately smoked agave rich introduction to the flavourful charms of this wholesome spirit.

The ‘mother of all the dead’ has a gentle kiss!

Mackmyra, Svensk Rök, Single Malt, 46.1%

Swedish Whisky.

Well worth visiting.

I haven’t had a duff one yet.

This subtly smoky Svensk Rök is no exception.

Smoky Swede c/othewhiskeynut

Wholly made with Swedish ingredients, non chill filtered & presented at natural colour – this is a gorgeous whisky.

Pale straw in appearance – the nose is invitingly softly smoky, clean & fresh.

Delightfully smooth on the palate initially, a slowly building warm woody campfire heats up into a spicy dry embracing smokiness.

I didn’t want the flickering embers & warm glow of the long finish to expire.

A highly enjoyable smoky Swede from the Mackmyra stable.
